The Origins of Shopify

Shopify was founded in 2006 by Tobi Lütke and Scott Lake in Ottawa, Canada. The idea for Shopify began in 2004 when Tobi Lütke, an avid snowboarder, wanted to sell snowboards online. However, dissatisfied with the available e-commerce solutions, Lütke, a programmer by trade, decided to build his own flexible and powerful platform. • 2004: Shopify was built on Ruby on Rails and used a single MySQL instance.
• 2009: Shopify introduced its API, allowing third-party applications to be sold on the Shopify App Store.
• 2010–2012: Shopify released an iOS app for Apple devices, acquired mobile software development company Select Start Studios, and launched Shopify Payments (rebranded as Shop Pay in 2020) to provide secure and seamless payment solutions.
• 2013: Shopify Payments was introduced, allowing merchants to bypass third-party payment processors.
• 2014: Shopify Plus was launched, catering to larger businesses with more advanced needs.
• 2015–2017: Shopify introduced the “Buy Button,” integrated with Facebook Messenger, and expanded into Amazon integration. The company also released point-of-sale hardware, including debit and credit card readers, enabling businesses to manage both online and offline sales seamlessly.
• 2019: Shopify launched Shopify Studios and added tools for merchants to directly purchase and manage Snapchat Story ads. The company also introduced Shopify Chat, a customer communication tool.
• 2022: Shopify acquired Dovetale, a New York-based influencer marketing startup, and Remix, a full-stack TypeScript framework, which enhanced page load speed and conversion rates.
• 2024: On June 3, Shopify announced the acquisition of Checkout Blocks, unlocking customizable, scalable checkout solutions without requiring code.
